Missale Terms of Use

Last updated: 1 October 2026

By using the Missale app you agree to these terms. Please read them: they are short, and they say exactly what the app is and what it is not.

1. What Missale is

Missale is a Catholic spirituality app for iPhone and iPad. It brings together the word of the day, the saint of the day, the liturgical calendar, formation tracks, the guided Rosary, prayers, the daily Examen, and Compline.

Using the app requires an account, created with Sign in with Apple. What you write and log stays on your device; the account is described in the Privacy Policy.

2. What Missale is not

It is not the official Missal or Lectionary. The Mass readings appear as a reference and a summary written by us. The full text of the readings is licensed by the bishops' conferences and is not in the app — the screen itself says so. To follow along at Mass, use a missal or your parish leaflet.

It does not replace a priest. The formation tracks and the Examen are materials for prayer and study. No screen in the app is confession, spiritual direction, or pastoral counselling, and none pretends to be.

It is not a health service. The Examen and the mood log are spiritual practices, not psychological or psychiatric assessment, diagnosis, or treatment. If you are in crisis, seek professional help: the app shows your country's support line on the screens where that is relevant, and those lines are not operated by us.

In an emergency, call your country's emergency number. Missale provides no assistance, does not monitor what you write, and alerts no one on your behalf.

3. Texts, sources, and translations

Every biblical, liturgical, or devotional text in the app names the edition it was transcribed from. We use editions in the public domain or published by the Holy See, and each language quotes an edition of its own — never a translation made by us from another language.

Historical editions keep their original spelling and are not the current liturgical translation. The screen shows only the edition's name and year; the full reference is here.

The Bible editions used for the word of the day are:

  • Portuguese: António Pereira de Figueiredo, Biblia Sagrada Illustrada, Porto, 1896; and Matos Soares, Bíblia Sagrada, 1956. Historical Catholic editions in the public domain, with their spelling preserved. Not the current CNBB liturgical translation.
  • English: Douay-Rheims, 1899 edition, marked public domain by eBible.org. Not the current USCCB liturgical translation.
  • Spanish: Félix Torres Amat, Sagrada Biblia, Madrid, 1823, and the Biblia de Oro, 1884. Historical Catholic editions in the public domain. Not the current CEE liturgical translation.

Images of saints and shrines come from public-domain works or from art produced for this app, with the credit recorded in the content archive.

If you find an error of reference, transcription, or attribution, write to erros@missale.app. We correct it, and we credit you.

4. Subscription

Part of the content is free forever, regardless of any subscription: the word of the day, the saint of the day, and the crisis support screens.

The rest is offered by optional subscription, monthly or yearly.

  • The price, the period, and the length of any free trial are shown on the subscription screen itself, before purchase, with the amounts in force in your region. They come from the App Store, not from this document.
  • Purchase, billing, renewal, and refunds are handled by the Apple App Store. We do not process payments and have no access to your payment details.
  • The subscription renews automatically at the end of each period, at the price then in force, unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the end of the current period.
  • To cancel, open iPhone Settings › your name › Subscriptions, or the App Store › your account › Subscriptions. Cancellation does not happen inside Missale, because only Apple can do it.
  • If there is a free trial and you subscribe during it, the unused part of the trial is forfeited, as Apple requires.
  • Refunds are granted by Apple, under Apple's rules. We cannot grant or refuse a refund.

If the cost is a genuine obstacle, write to acesso@missale.app.

5. Your data

Missale does not keep what you write: it stays on your device. There are two exceptions, where the text passes through our server to Jev without being kept or logged: the guidance, when you ask for it, and, if you subscribe, have "Personalize with what I write" on, and have already allowed it in the prompt that appears the first time, the Rosary intention, the Examen answers, the morning intention and your latest log of how you are, used to choose content from the reviewed collection. In the guidance, the text and the passage and saint chosen also go to Anthropic (Claude), which writes a short reflection. In the onboarding guidance, the answers you gave to the questionnaire go along with the text, for the same purpose and without being kept. You can turn personalization off in Settings, and erasing your data also erases that permission. The details are in the Privacy Policy, which forms part of these terms.

What Jev chooses is a suggestion drawn from the collection based on your text, and the reflection that comes with the guidance is written by AI from it. Neither is a word addressed to you by God, nor spiritual direction.

Because nothing you write is kept off the device, backing up is your responsibility. If you delete the app or change devices, your notes are gone and we have no copy to return. To keep a copy, use Settings › Your data › Export my data.

6. Acceptable use

You may use Missale for your own life of prayer and study, and quote the content while crediting the sources it names.

You may not: commercially redistribute the archive's content; present the texts as the official liturgical translation where the app states they are not; or attempt to circumvent the subscription check.

7. The archive, and what is still missing

The archive grows in batches and is explicit about its limits. Where a date, a saint, or a Sunday is not yet registered, the app says "not registered yet" rather than filling the gap with something invented. Some records are flagged for editorial review in our research base.

This means the app is incomplete by design, and honest about where. We do not promise full coverage of the General Roman Calendar or of the Roman Martyrology.

8. Changes

We may change these terms as the app changes. The date at the top shows the last change. Changes affecting the subscription will be communicated before they take effect.

9. Liability

Missale is provided "as is". We do our best to keep references and texts correct and sourced, but we do not warrant that they are free of error. To the extent permitted by applicable law, we are not liable for indirect damages arising from use of the app. Nothing in these terms removes the rights consumer law gives you.

10. Governing law and contact

These terms are governed by the laws of Brazil. Nothing here removes the rights granted to you by the consumer law of your own country.
